Let’s talk about Google compliance / Facebook compliance / Any ad network compliance real quick…

Over the years I’ve had clients ads who have been disapproved for lots of different reasons. What ensued was long hours talking with ad reps about how to fix the policy violation.

To save you the time and hassle, here is a complete list of compliance issues I’ve come across so you can fix yours fast (as I come across any new ones I will update this list):

  • Your domain’s primary purpose MUST NOT be to capture personal information
  • You MUST have a page present at the root of your domain/subdomain, not just in subfolders
  • No unsubstantiated claims (eg: lose 10 pounds in 10 days). Instead you can try to turn your claim into a story (eg: how a busy Mom lost 10 pounds in 10 days). If that doesn’t work, you can try to appeal your disapproval or turn it into a tactic (eg: one weight loss hack a busy Mom is using to lose weight)
  • No unsubstantiated claims on ALL pages of your site (Google will check)
  • No body shaming, fear mongering, luring, baiting, hyperbole, ideal body pics, outrageous promises or images
  • No redirects. The URL you use in your ad MUST go to the same URL
  • Your robots.txt file must be installed on your website
  • If you use a video or VSL on your landing page, it is allowed to autoplay but their must be basic play/pause controls and the length of the video must be visible
  • Your landing page cannot only have a video on it. It must contain information about your product/service/offer
  • Avoid clickbait language (eg: health warning, make money fast, shocking)
  • You need a custom privacy policy that mentions all the ad networks you advertise on and all the retargeting cookies you use (no boiler-plate templates that don’t cover specific issues to your business)
  • If your domain has a red rating on Web Of Trust (mywot.com) then you need to get a new domain. If it is grey or yellow then continue to build a trustworthy website with a great user experience
  • No bad popups that change browser behaviour (eg: don’t let you click the Back button, open multiple windows/tabs, exit popups that force you to take an action, etc). Good popups that don’t stop the users normal browsing experience are ok (eg: welcome mats, smartbars, scroll boxes, time delay popups, exit intent popups, etc)

NOTE: If you’ve been banned and you want to get un-banned…

  1. Research why you were banned
  2. Fix the problem
  3. Copy everything to a new domain
  4. Create a new ad account with a new credit card (or updated number)
  5. Re-submit your campaign with ONLY 1 AD

Follow these simple rules and you won’t be a legal liability to Google or any other ad network, and your ads will run without a problem.

The bottom line is…

If you’re trying to find where the line is on ad compliance, you’re doing it all wrong

Don’t even come close to the line and you’ll be fine.
